MCD 2022 - Pilot Project

We conducted our pilot project in the recently conducted Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) election 2022. The platform was implemented in Shakarpur, Ward 202. Voters of this ward were asked for the most pressing issues in their locality and then these questions were compiled and asked to each candidate.
A day before the election, voters were sent the link /election/mcd2022/202 that provided them single click access to the below interface, where they could see answers of all their candidates in one place.
ABOUT
The vote ki awaaz platform seeks to use the digital space to maximise voter participation in political and electoral debate. Our intervention is primarily in the media ecosystem to facilitate consistent and structured dialogue on grassroots issues. The platform is currently being implemented only in local body (Municipal and Panchayati raj) elections to ensure a non-competitive media space that focuses exclusively upon hyper localised and ward specific developmental concerns. With this initiative, we seek to address the following issues in our information ecosystem in terms of developing a more informed electorate:
Accessibility and structure
While competitive local media channels carry out ward specific coverage of the elections, the information collected by them lacks structure, and is time consuming to navigate through, on account of the content overload on these platforms. VKA cuts through the noise and provides voters with one click access to the representations of their ward specific candidates, structured as per the questions submitted by voters on the platform and the legally obligated responsibilities of the elected office
Information Asymmetry
Digital media has yet to fully realise its potential to further representative democracy and facilitate effective communication between the citizen and their representatives. Elections are a bottleneck solution to issues and the most fundamental process of representative democracy. As such it is necessary to break the reliance on competitive or state-owned media channels, over framing the issues for which accountability is primarily sought during elections and build the capacities of voters to do the same. VKA seeks to balance the information asymmetry between voters and candidates, vis a vis how easily they can influence one another and thus the narratives upon which elections are fought
Accountability for data sourcing
There is a professional competitive market that collects data from voters regarding governance issues to inform the campaigns of political parties. This market is primarily accountable to the said political parties, and only engages with voters as a data point. VKA follows up on this data collection to intimate voters of the proposed solutions, to the concerns voiced by them. Voters can also come back to this page after 5 years to hold the incumbents accountable to their promises
